The Wellington Mahjong & Chinese Chess Club began in early 2024 with a group of 4–5 friends playing casual Mahjong games. We then hosted several informal restaurant sessions through the Wellington China Tongue Meetup group, which helped extend the club into a wider social circle. In June 2024, we moved to a dedicated venue and officially formed the club.
We’re grateful to the Tung Jung Association of New Zealand, who provided sponsorship and financial support during the first six months. Their backing also brought in members of the older Chinese community at launch, helping shape the intergenerational mix we have today.
We primarily play 13-tile Cantonese rules.
Teaching is offered during Saturday sessions, especially for beginners.
Players are free to use their own house rules, scoring systems, and preferred styles.
Other variants occasionally played include Taiwanese, Hong Kong, and Sichuan.
A few sets include western numerals to support new learners.
While Mahjong is the focus, we also welcome games of Chinese Chess (象棋) and Go (圍棋).
A small number of sets are available for each.
Rule reference sheets are provided.
A tutor may be available on an ad hoc basis to assist new players.
